Saying Video Card Counting Secrets Isn't A Table Game Is L

Whether a real, live human dealer hands you an ace of spades and a jack of hearts, or a video dealer does the same, you've just hit 21 and the game is called card counting secrets.

But, while the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board considers the first a table game -- and table games are illegal in Pennsylvania -- it considers the second a video game and, technically, a legal slot machine. ''You're not really playing card counting secrets,'' says Gaming Board Chairwoman Mary DiGiacomo Colins. ''It's basically a video game'' with a ''really complicated mathematical formula'' that makes it a slot machine.

Well, here's something that's not complicated. Most people who play the video card counting secrets games -- and there are 53 machines with 265 stations at six of the state's seven operating slots casinos -- think they are playing the same game that requires them to beat the dealer's two kings with cards adding up to 21 -- whether or not the dealer is breathing across the table or flickering on a video screen.

The makers of the video card counting secrets machines know this simple truth, too. They designed them to get around prohibitions against table games in states like Pennsylvania. Mark Yoseloff, chairman of Shuffle Master, which makes the machines, says ''What constitutes a slot machine in any particular jurisdiction differs from place to place.'' So much for complicated mathematical formulas!
